Every trainer has a coaching cue they say over and over again.
Mine just happened to become my philosophy.
It wasn’t created as a slogan. It wasn’t something I came up with for a T-shirt or a business card.
It started in the gym.
Every day, I saw people trying to lift more weight than they could actually control. They cared more about the number on the dumbbell or the bar than the quality of the movement. Bad form, swinging weights, using momentum—anything to say they lifted a certain amount.
So I started telling my clients something simple.
“I should be able to say ‘stop’ at any point during the exercise, and you should be able to hold the weight right there.”
If you can’t control the movement, the weight is controlling you.
That idea became one of the biggest foundations of my coaching. Proper form always comes before heavier weight. Strength isn’t measured by what you can throw around—it’s measured by what you can control.
Over time, I realized the phrase meant something much bigger.
For years, I struggled with my own body weight. At my heaviest, I weighed nearly 300 pounds. I wasn’t born with great genetics. I didn’t take shortcuts. I didn’t rely on medications or miracle solutions. I changed my habits, stayed disciplined, and put in the work—day after day, month after month.
Eventually, I lost over 100 pounds and completely transformed my life.
Looking back, I realized I wasn’t just learning to control the weight in my hands.
I was learning to stop letting my weight control my life.
That’s why this phrase means so much to me.
It’s about lifting with purpose.
It’s about building confidence.
It’s about creating habits that last.
It’s about taking control of your health, your mindset, and your future.
Because fitness isn’t about proving how much weight you can lift.
It’s about proving to yourself that you’re capable of becoming the person you want to be.
My Philosophy
I don’t coach for 12 weeks.
I coach for the next 30 years of your life.
I don’t care what you bench if your form is breaking down.
I don’t believe in shortcuts because shortcuts don’t build lasting habits.
I believe in consistency over perfection.
I believe in discipline over motivation.
I believe fitness should make your life better—not take it over.
I believe every workout should move you one step closer to the person you want to become.
And above all…
Control the Weight.
Don’t Let the Weight Control You.
